Literacy Outreach serves functionally illiterate adults throughout Garfield County. Our clients possess literacy skills below the 4th grade level. For example, a functionally illiterate adult is unable to fill out an employment application, follow written instructions, or read a newspaper. In Garfield County, basic literacy services are needed for two populations: adults with limited or no English proficiency and adults lacking basic reading, math or writing skills in any language.
The policy of Literacy Outreach is to accept as priority, students who have the greatest barriers to literacy and learning. We work with the hardest to reach and the hardest to teach. Students will work in a one-on-one or small group situation. Students should be aware that all tutors are volunteers who have received 10 hours of formal training.
The following criteria must be met:
Students must be 16 years or older and no longer enrolled in the public school system.
Traditional literacy or math students must function at or below the fourth grade level.
EFL students must score at or below 224 on the CASAS exam or have another barrier for attendance at adult basic education classes.
A student must need one-to-one or small group instruction to succeed.
A student must be willing to sign a student/tutor contract.
A $25 registration fee will be charged every six months. Fees may be waived at the discretion of the director.
