Movie Day - Cartoons from the 30's

 Come to the Gordon Cooper Branch Library on the fourth Tuesday of each month for popcorn and a movie! In February, Movie Day will be related to The Big Read and feature cartoons from the 1930's, including Mickey Mouse!

Story Art with the Aspen Art Museum

 This month's Story Art will be related to The Big Read. Led by an instructor from the Aspen Art Museum, Story Art combines learning to read with art-making and activities that build visual literacy. This popular program introduces children to the basic foundations of art through engaging storybooks, looking activities, and hands-on art projects. The Big Read 2013 book is "The Grapes of Wrath," which is set in the Dust Bowl of the 1930's. Story Art programs are held on the second Tuesday of each month and are for children in grades K-5.

Big Read Storytime for Preschoolers

 The Gordon Cooper Branch Library presents a Big Read storytime for preschoolers on Wednesday, February 6th at 10:30 a.m. with age-appropriate songs and stories from the Dust Bowl era. Come hear songs from the Woody Guthrie “Grow Big collection.” Children will even get to make and play tambourines. This program will be led by Sue Schnitzer, the Gordon Cooper Branch Youth Services Librarian, and an award winning children’s musician.

Big Read Storytime for Infants & Toddlers

 The Gordon Cooper Branch Library presents a Big Read storytime on Thursday, February 7th at 10:30 a.m. with age-appropriate songs and stories from the Dust Bowl era. Great Depression Game Day

 Did you know that Monopoly was created during the Great Depression as a way to make light of the terrible economy, allowing people to revel in the opportunity to "travel" to Atlantic City, become a millionaire, and purchase real estate?

Get in the Big Read spirit, and come to the Silt Branch Library on Saturday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m. for the Great Depression Game Day to try your luck in Monopoly. Other toys and games for kids to play will be available. Light refreshments will be served.

Grapes of Wrath Movie Night

 Don’t’ miss this viewing of the classic film “The Grapes of Wrath,” starring Henry Fonda. This Big Read program will be at the Rifle Branch Library on Friday, February 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Make Your Own Rock Candy!

 As part of the Big Read celebration, travel back to the 1930s by learning how to make homemade rock candy.

Grade schoolers and middle schoolers are welcome to join us at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library on Friday, February 22nd from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. for a free afternoon of fun. After making rock candy, we’ll enjoy depression era games such as Hopscotch, Yo-yo’s, and popular board games. So come listen to Big Band music, eat freshly popped popcorn, and enter into a raffle for a 1930s-themed prize! The library is located at 413 9th Street.
