T-Shirt Surgery

 Teens are invited to join us at the New Castle Branch Library for an afternoon of t-shirt surgery on Saturday, February 23rd at 1:00 p.m.  

It is time to take that old t-shirt and turn it into something new, just like they did during the Great Depression. Make a fashionable shirt, a scarf, a dress, or whatever else you can come up with. Bring your own shirt, or use one of ours!  Program is limited to the first 20 teens.

Manga & Anime Club

 Do you love Manga and Anime? So do we! Join us at the New Castle Branch Library on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. to talk about your favorites, get recommendations, and practice your drawing skills.

Dust Bowl Tunes

 Kids ages 5 to 11 are invited to the New Castle Branch Library on Saturday, February 9th at 2:00 p.m. for a special Big Read event.

Sue Schnitzer, Carbondale's Youth Services Librarian, will be performing Woodie Guthrie songs, and children will have the opportunity to make their own instruments. Come learn about the 1930s, and have fun singing some your favorites with Sue! 

Dinner and a Movie: The Grapes of Wrath

 Join us at the New Castle Branch Library for a Big Read event on Monday, February 4th at 6:00 p.m. Take a night off and a trip back in time for a showing of “The Grapes of Wrath” and bring-what-you-can soup. New Castle will provide crock pots, both vegetarian and meat variety soup broth, and eating utensils. We encourage all who come to bring something cooked or prepared beforehand (a can of beans, cut vegetables, cooked chicken, etc.) to add to the soup, which will be served throughout the film showing.

What Are You Reading? Bookclub

What are you reading? Bookclub is a book discussion group for elementary school aged children, from 3rd through 5th grades. Meet at the New Castle Branch Library on Tuesday, February 5th 4:30 p.m. to share your favorite books and authors. After school snacks will be served!  Bookclub meets on the first Tuesday of every month.

Toddler Storytime

 All toddlers are invited to join us at the New Castle Branch Library for stories, crafts and new friends every Monday at 10:30! You are never too young to enjoy stories!

After School Arts and Crafts

 All elementary school aged children are invited to meet at the New Castle Branch Library at 4:30 p.m. on February 7. We will explore different arts and crafts. All supplies will be provided, as well as after school snacks.  This program takes place on the first Thursday of every month.

Thunder River Theatre's Literary Night Features John Steinbeck

 The Thunder River Theatre presents a free literary night on Friday, February 8th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the theater in downtown Carbondale as part of Garfield County Libraries’ Big Read.

Old Timers Remember Hard Times of the Depression: Interviews with Walter Gallacher

 Walter Gallacher, creator of Immigrant Stories, a series of interviews which appears in the Glenwood Post and on KDNK Community Radio has teamed with Garfield County Library for The Big Read: The Grapes of Wrath, by interviewing locals who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930's.

Interactive Woody Guthrie Activity for Kids

 Kids, ages 6 to12, are invited to come to the Gordon Cooper Branch Library at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19th to celebrate The Big Read with a singing and playing interactive performance by Youth Services Librarian, Sue Schnitzer.

Woody Guthrie sets the dust bowl era to life with hundreds of famous songs. Come learn about the 1930's, and have fun singing some your favorites with Sue.
