 Garfield County Libraries is pleased to present free swing dance classes throughout February to celebrate The Big Read 2013. Maurine Taufer, Dance Director from the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts, has taught, directed, and choreographed for over 22 years. She is excited to bring you the most favorite dance style of the 1930’s. Whether you have two left feet, no dance experience, or just want to have fun and learn something new -- this class is for you! Come to the library to swing, sway and hop with us, and you’ll be kicking up your heals before you know it.

 Like to read? This club is open to all teens who like to read and talk about good books with new friends. This month we will be discussing "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse on Wednesday, February 13th at 5:00 p.m.

 Teens currently part of TAG, as well as anyone in grades 7-12, are invited to join us for the chance to help plan programs, purchase books, movies, and music for teens. TAG meets on Monday, February 18th at 5:00 p.m.

 Teens are invited to join us at the New Castle Branch Library for an afternoon of t-shirt surgery on Saturday, February 23rd at 1:00 p.m.  

It is time to take that old t-shirt and turn it into something new, just like they did during the Great Depression. Make a fashionable shirt, a scarf, a dress, or whatever else you can come up with. Bring your own shirt, or use one of ours!  Program is limited to the first 20 teens.

 Do you love Manga and Anime? So do we! Join us at the New Castle Branch Library on Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. to talk about your favorites, get recommendations, and practice your drawing skills.

 Larry Williams' photography students will exhibit black and white photography inspired by Great Depression era photo journalism, as well as by Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” at Carbondale’s Third Street Center in February. The exhibit will consist of emulations, re-creations, and comparisons from the talented students of RFHS. Black and white graphic work from art students will be included in the show.

 Alejandra, librarian and native Spanish speaker, will lead a book discussion of "The Grapes of Wrath" in Spanish on Wednesdays in February at 6:30 p.m. in the community room of the Gordon cooper Library. We have available copies of "Las Uvas de la Ira" in Spanish. Please sign up at the library or call Alejandra at 963-2889.

 Don't miss the Grapes of Wrath Film Festival this February at the Gordon Cooper Branch Library. We will show sections of Ken Burns' newest documentary, "The Dust Bowl," and the 1940's movie, "The Grapes of Wrath," every Thursday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Readers, history buffs, old timers, and movie fans are welcome to come for one or all of the showings and invited to share your memories of the Great Depression. Librarian Brenda will lead a discussion on John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" and the Great Depression.

Garfield County Libraries invites you to an old-fashioned gathering on Sunday, February 24 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Third Street Center to celebrate the spirit of sharing during the ʺhard timesʺ of the Great Depression, as depicted in the great American classic, “The Grapes of Wrath.” For this Big Read event, we'll have soup and bread for all.
